Bucsek said treatment was likely carried out on several patients.

"We assume in 8 cases, but there could be many more," Bucsek said.

The doses had not been tested, and the suspects carried out the treatments without permission from Hungary's health authorities, police said in the statement.

Police carried out house searches and seized computers and documents.

The International Society for Stem Cell Research said in a report released in December that it was "very concerned" that stem cell therapies are being sold around the world before they have been proven safe and effective.

The group of stem cell experts also released guidelines for researchers and regulators and a guidebook for patients without naming any specific clinic.

Hungary's Health Ministry issued a brief statement on Wednesday saying that at the moment no institution in the country had permission to carry out human stem cell research.

"Nowhere in the world is this used as therapy and on a regular basis, there are only tests and research," it added.

It said only Hungary's Healthcare Scientific Council has the authority to issue permission to conduct stem cell research.

"Research cannot be conducted without permission," the ministry said, without giving more details.

Stem cells are the body's 'master cells', the source of all cells and tissue, including brain, blood, heart, bones and muscles. Embryonic stem cells come from days-old embryos and can produce any type of cell in the body.

La polizia ha detto che i sospetti acquisite le cellule staminali da embrioni o feti abortiti.

Bucsek detto trattamento è stato probabilmente effettuati su pazienti diversi.

"Non ci assumiamo in 8 casi, ma ci potrebbero essere molti di più", ha detto Bucsek.

Le dosi non erano stati testati, ed i sospetti effettuati i trattamenti senza il permesso delle autorità ungheresi per la salute, la polizia ha detto nella dichiarazione.

Polizia ha effettuato perquisizioni domiciliari e sequestrati computer e documenti.

Società Internazionale per la ricerca sulle cellule staminali ha detto in un rapporto pubblicato nel mese di dicembre che era "molto preoccupato" le terapie con cellule staminali, che vengono venduti in tutto il mondo prima di aver dimostrato sicuro ed efficace.

Il gruppo di esperti sulle cellule staminali anche pubblicato linee guida per i ricercatori e le autorità di regolamentazione e una guida per i pazienti senza nominare alcuna clinica specifica.

Ungheria il ministero della sanità rilasciato una breve dichiarazione sul Mercoledì dicendo che al momento nessuna istituzione nel paese aveva il permesso di svolgere attività di ricerca sulle cellule staminali umane.

"In nessuna parte del mondo è questo utilizzato come terapia e su base regolare, ci sono solo esami e ricerche", ha aggiunto.

Ha detto solo l'Ungheria's Healthcare Consiglio scientifico ha il potere di rilasciare il permesso di condurre una ricerca sulle cellule staminali.

"La ricerca non possono essere effettuate senza autorizzazione", ha detto il ministero, senza fornire ulteriori dettagli.

Le cellule staminali sono del corpo 'cellule master', la fonte di tutte le cellule e tessuti, compresi cervello, sangue, cuore, ossa e muscoli. Le cellule staminali embrionali vengono dagli embrioni vecchio e in grado di produrre qualsiasi tipo di cellula del corpo.
